What ten minutes of ping pong a day can do for you
In this week’s blog, we thought we’d talk about the importance of creating a collaborative, fun environment for our staff and the benefits that can bring. At NetEDI, we’re all about keeping people happy and healthy while at work and ping pong is just one way that our people can decompress and socialise at the office.
Added to that, there are quite a few studies out there that show taking a break for some exercise while at work can improve concentration and reduce stress. So with that in mind, let’s have a chat with Aaron and Shola from our QA department about what ten minutes of ping pong a day can do for you.
Q. What benefits do you get from playing ping pong at work?
Aaron: Well, they say sitting down all day, every day is one of the biggest killers. It’s good to take a break from whatever you’re doing. It helps your concentration levels when you go back to your desk.
Shola: I’ve never worked anywhere with a ping pong table before and, it does make a difference to my stress levels. If you’re working on a tricky problem ten minutes away from your desk can relax your mind, and it’s easier to find a solution when you get back.
Q. What about the social aspect of the game?
Shola: The social aspect is key, and it can really help you get to know people from other departments. We pride ourselves in having a family environment here so it’s important to me to chat with as many people as possible.
Aaron: It does get everyone talking and it really helped me to get to know people faster when I started.
Q. And a bit of healthy competition never hurt anyone, right?
Aaron: There’s quite a bit of competition in the office which is fun. A few people are pretty good – I’m not on the league table yet, I just stick to exhibition matches.
Shola: Simon, one of our developers, is the guy to beat – everywhere he’s worked has had table tennis apparently! Jack in Operations is another one of my main rivals.
Q. Who normally wins out of you two?
Q. Any tips for someone new to the game Shola?
Shola: You’ve got to have good reflexes, if you don’t, don’t bother. Nah, joking! The most important thing is to take a moment out of your day and have fun. And going for the corners will get you a long way.
Q. Do you think business owners should make it a priority to have something like ping pong available in the working day?
Aaron: Definitely. Not feeling tied to your desk is so important for your overall well-being.
Shola: Agreed. I think it’s becoming more common now for companies to have games rooms like we do, and that can only be a good thing. And it’s convenient to be able to do some exercise in the working day, rather than squeezing it in before or after work.
So, there you have it! Why not try and incorporate something like ping pong into your working day and see if you feel the positive effects? We’re currently recruiting for several roles across the company – if you think you could fit into the team at NetEDI, just have a look at our current job opportunities.
